What is gender bias?
When a researcher does not accurately represent the experience of one or more genders this often takes the form of poor samples, making assumptions and over generalising a whole gender
Alpha bias - gender bias
When differences between genders are exaggerated this most commonly takes the form of identifying gender differences and implying that one gender is superior
Beta bias - gender bias
Beta bias is when differences between genders are ignored this most commonly takes the form of poor sampling where only one gender is represented
Androcentrism
Male psychologist views their own gender as the norm and others as ab normal
Gynocentriism
Female psychologists views their own gender as the norm and others as ab normal
Examples of beta bias
Zimbardos prison experiment this study ignored women as sample was all men + Ainsworth at strange situation only mothers where used as they where believed to be baby’s only primary attachment
Alpha bias examples ?
Freud saw males as superior he refereed to femininity as a failed masculinity + role of the farther Grossman said mother is the main caregiver as well as bolbwys theory of material deprivation
