What was the first main branch of psychology?

A

Wundt was said to have set up the first laboratory in psychology in 1879. He focused on introspection to find oout how memory works and focussed on how we think. This was the start of the cognitive approach.

What type of psychology was studied in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s?

A

Freud studied mental illness and focused on where people had physical symptoms but no cause. He believed taht behaviour was largely determined by thoughts, behaviours and wishes which we are unaware of. Freud developed psychotherapy as a treatment. His research method was mostly case studies.

What happened from the 1920s?

A

Behaviouism was started by Watson which was an important development. Watson argued that mental processes could not be reliably located or measured and that only observable, measurable behaviour should be the focus of psychology. Proposed that all behaviour could be explained as responses to stimuli in the environment. It is based on operant conditioning.

A

Computer science developed from the 1960s which helped the development of the computer processing model and a new way of thinking of the brain.

A

WW2 prompted a greater enquirery in to socIal psychology and the ‘germans are different’ hypothesis.

A

There were advances in biological psychology due to the introduction of scanning techniques such as PET, CAT and fMRI.
