Arab
a person who speaks Arabic and shares or identifies with Arab culture, could be Muslim, Christian or Druze (there are Arabic speaking Jews too)
Muslim
a person who adheres to, believes in, or identifies with the religion and or culture of Islam
jew
a person who adheres to, believes in, or identifies with the religion and or culture of Judaism
Israel
a person who adheres to, believes in, or identifies with the religion and or culture of Judaism
Palestine
historically a territory in the eastern Mediterranean, south of Syria, north of Egypt. Britain controlled a Palestinian Mandate after WWI. It had been Ottoman land. Today Palestine is the term used for either all or some of the West Bank, Gaza or in some cases even Israel itself.
Palestinian
an Arab who lives in or identifies with the territory of Palestine, the West Bank, or Gaza.
West Bank
the piece of land west of the Jordan River, south of the Sea of Galillee (Kinneret) and north of the Dead Sea, part of “Palestinian territory” or Palestine.
Gaza
small strip of land along the Mediterranean Sea, north of Egypt, part of “Palestinian territory” or Palestine.
Zionist/Zionism
Jewish nationalism, the idea that Jews are a people, like other “peoples,” who have a culture and a homeland which should be in the “Lanf of Zion” or Israel.
PLO
Palestinian Liberation Organization, an organization that fought for the independence of Palestine and became a defacto “government in exile,” “a terrorist organization.”
Hamas
“Islamic Resistance Movement” a more “radical” and “extreme” organization that fought for the independence of Palestine, “a terrorist organization,” now a political party in a semi-autonmous Gaza.
Refugee/refugee camps
people displaced from their home or homeland, refugees may live in other countries or in camps. (ex: Deheishe in the West Bank)
Settlements
towns, villages, areas where Jews have set up homes in the West Bank, some are legal, some are not.
Wars
1948 (Independence), 1967 (Six Day War) 1973 (Yom Kipur) ** Names of wars can be different depending on which side you are on. I gave you the names Israelis use.
Intifada
Arabic for “the uprising” a series of disturbances and violence between Palestinians and Israelis, started in 1989
