Isotonic, hypotonic, and hypertonic Flashcards
isotonic fluids (4)
0.9% NS, 5% dextrose in water (D5W), 5% dextrose in 0.225 saline, LR
after dextrose is absorbed in D5W, it goes from isotonic to
hypotonic
why are isotonic solutions used
blood loss, dehydration, surgery (blood loss).
given when cell needs to be enlarged. blood volume less than 275
hypotonic
given when blood plasma is between 275-295
isotonic solution
side effect of hypotonic solutions
cause cell lysis. deplete circulatory system fluid because it went into the cell
hypotonic solutions (3)
0.45% saline (1/2 NS), 0.225% saline (1/4 NS), 0.33% saline (1/3 NS)
which conditions would you use hypotonic fluids because cell is dehydrated
DKA, hyperglycemia
when do you NEVEr give hypotonic solution
increased cranial pressure. will shift fluid into the brain tissue and cause swelling. Also, burns and trauma
given when cell needs to be shrunk Blood plasma greater than 295
hypertonic solution
too much of this solution can cause backup of ECF casing fluid overload (pulmonary edema)
hypertonic solution
when giving hypertonic solution the cell is going to
shrink
hypertonic solutions (6)
3 % saline, 5% saline, 10% dextrose in water, 5% dextrose in 0.9 NS, 5% destrose in 1/2 NS, 5% dextrose in LR
hypertonic solutions treats
hyponatremia (pulls sodium back into intravascular system), cerebral edema to decrease swelling in brain
which solution is usually give in ICU where continuous monitoring can happen and via central line because it can cause phlebitis
hypertonic
