Isolation and loneliness Flashcards
Topic sentence 1
Dickens shows how isolation and loneliness can impact the opinions of others around you
“Solitary as an oyster “
Oysters spend all of their life in a shell alone just like Scrooge who is in a metaphorical shell that deters people from going near him or speaking to him
“Solitary child neglected by his friends”
Scrooge is alone and solitary and has been left behind by his friends and now doesn’t have any
Topic sentence 2
Dickens shows how isolation and loneliness can cause others around you to not care about you once you are dead
“He frightened everyone away when he was alive to profit us when he was dead”
As Scrooge died alone with nobody around him his charwoman was able to steal all of his stuff and nobody knew
“Neglected grave”
Nobody ever looked after or visited his grave
Topic sentence 3
Dickens shows how isolation and loneliness affected Scrooge which deters a Victorian audience from following in his footsteps
“Not to interfere with other people’s “
Scrooge did not socialise with other people and as such is now a miserable miser
“Never dreamed that any walk could give him such happiness”
When scrooge actually talks and socialises with people he becomes much happier
What is dickens message
Shows a Victorian reader that if you are happy and not lonely and isolated you live a happier life but if you are then you will live a cold and depressing life
