ISM Flashcards
ISM
The ISM Code provides an international standard for the safe management and operation of ships and for pollution prevention
A Safety and Environmental Protection Policy.
Address issues of health, safety and the environment as they affect the company and its staff, both ashore and afloat.
On board procedures
Simple procedures should be developed for the operation of the vessel.
• Testing of equipment, including steering gear, prior to commencing a passage;
• Navigation and handling of the vessel;
• Maintenance routines;
• Bunkering operations;
• Watertight/weathertight integrity;
• Stability of the vessel;
• Conduct of passengers and crew while on board;
• Emergency towing (may be in a separate document);
• Safe use and qualification of users for personal watercraft.
Reporting of accidents
Vessels are required to report to the company and have a procedure. All accidents should be recorded and reported to implement corrective action, with the aim of improving safety.
Designated Person(s)
To ensure the safe operation of each ship and to provide a link between the Company and those on board, every Company, as appropriate, should designate a person or persons ashore having direct access to the highest level of management. The responsibility and authority of the DP or persons should include monitoring the safety and pollution prevention aspects of the operation of each ship and ensuring that adequate resources and shore-based support are applied, as required.
