Island Biogeography Flashcards
Island bio geography theory
States that smaller area correlated to smaller number of species ( area effect )
Archipelago
A sea or stretch of water containing many islands
Autecology
the branch of ecology that concerns itself with the individual organism or the individual species
biogeography
the branch of biology that deals with the geographical distribution of plants and animals
Competitive exclusion
the inevitable elimination from a habitat of one of two different species with identical needs for resources
Dispersal mode
refers to both the movement of individuals from their birth site to their breeding site, as well as the movement from one breeding site to another
Taxon
A taxonomic group of any rank, such as species, family or class
Area effect
Due to the fact that the small island supports smaller populations which are subject to a greater chance of extinction
Distance effect
The distance from the mainland is invesrely proportional to the number of species on an island
Equation
S=CAz, S=# species, A= Area of Island, C=valuse of S at A=1…..Log(S) = log(C) +zlog(A)
Z=(log(s2)-log(s1)/ (log(A2) - log(A1))
