Animal Diversity Flashcards
Acoelomate
A type of body plan among triploblastic animals where the coelom has completely filled with mesoderm tissue, leaving no cavity
Asymmetry
Lack of equality or equivalence between parts or aspects of something; lack of symmetry
Cephalization
an evolutionary trend in which, over many generations, the mouth, sense organs and nerve ganglia become concentrated at the front end of an animal producing a head region
Coelom
hbody cavity completely lined with mesoderm
Ceolomate
have a body cavity called a coelom with a complete lining called peritoneum derived from mesoderm (one of the three primary tissue layers)
Protosome
A multicellular organism whose mouth develops from a primary embryonic opening such as an annelid, mollusk, or arthropod
Pseudocoelomoate
body cavity partially lined with mesoderm
Deuterostomes
A monophyletic superphylum. these organisms have the blastopore develop into the animals anus and early cleavage is radial and indeterminate.
Arthropods
Most numerous animal phylum ; segemented bodies; chitin exoskeleton; metamorphosis; gas exchange occur via trachea, gills or book lungs; open circulatory system; ventral nerouv system with ganglia
Reptiles
Ectothermic, body covered in scutes or scales; 3-chambered heart
Mammalia
Endothermic; mammary glands produce milk for offspring; hair for thermoregulation; differentiated teeth for specialized feeding
Goal of lab
Classify animals into different classes and phylum
Procedure
Observe and draw; identify taxonimc ranks, phylum, class and order ; describe characteristics of basic body plan; add 3 details about niche
porifera
sponges, have hollow body;
cnidaria
have true tissues; diploblastic; aquatic mostly
