Island Biogeography Flashcards
What are the four types of islands?
Islands, lakes, mountains, valleys, and forests
What is the island equilibrium model?
The number of species present on an island at equilibrium will be the balance between immigration to the island and nearby land masses and extinction of organisms on the island
How does distance from nearby land masses affect immigration?
Dispersal ability of organisms
How does the size of an island affect extinction?
Competition between organisms
What does the point between immigration and extinction mean for an island?
It is the maximum number of organisms an island can support before it is unstable
What is an endemic species?
A species found in one place and no where else
What is a native species?
A species naturally occurring in multiple areas
What is an introduced species?
A species brought by humans to certain areas
What is an invasive species?
A species that is introduced and has a negative impact on the native species
How does human activity affect the island equilibrium model?
Separating habitats with road and citites
Making dispersal easier through transportation
When are islands likely to have more species?
When they are larger and closer to other landmasses
