Biogeochemistry Flashcards
What is a pool?
A specific place you would find a compound
What is a flux?
A process which compounds move between two pools
(EX: photosynthesis)
What is the keeling curve?
The rise and fall of atmospheric CO2 levels produces by respiration and used by photosynthesis
What ecosystem greatly contributes unequally to the atmospheric CO2 levels?
The boreal forest
-highly productive
-highly seasonal
-uneven in two hemispheres
What is the largest pool in the global hydrologic cycle?
Ocean
What is the largest flux in the global hydrologic cycle?
Evaporation
What is the largest pool in the global nitrogen cycle?
Atmosphere
What is the largest flux in the global nitrogen cycle?
Both marine biomass and dissolved nitrogen in ocean water
What is the whale pump?
What consumes deep below the surface and poops at the surface which contains a lot of nitrogen released in the ocean
What is a dead zone?
An body of water where there is no oxygen leading to the suffocation of many organisms
What is the possible impact of a dead zone?
Not only death but also mutations infertility and development
