Tawhid
“Oneness” in reference to God. This is a basic Muslim belief in the oneness of God
Halal
“Permitted” Actions or things which are permitted in Islam, such as eating permitted foods
Haram
“Forbidden” Actions or things which are forbidden in Islam, such as eating forbidden foods
Jihad
To strive or struggle. There are two forms of Jihad. The greater Jihad is the daily struggle and inner spiritual striving to live as a muslim. The lesser jihad is a physical struggle or “holy war” in defence of Islam
Mosque or Masjid
A “place of prostration” for muslims, it is a communal place of worship for a Muslim community
Ummah
“brotherhood” Refers to the worldwide community of Muslims who share a common religous identity
Refering to each other as brother and sister
Shari’ah
(straight path)
The straight path. Shariah law is the set of moral and religous rules that put the principles set out by the Qur’an and the Hadith into practice.
Prophethood
(Risalah)
The messengers of God, beginning with Adam and ending with the prophet Muhammed (pbuh)
Immanence
Everywhere (Allah is always close and present in all things)
Transcendence
Allah is above and beyond anything that exist in this world
Omnipotent
Allah is all powerful
Beneficience
Allah is all loving (omnibenevolent)
Merciful
Allah is all forgiving and compassionate
Justice
Allah is fair, he judges all people equally and with perfect justice
(shias use the word Adalat which means justice)
