What is a imam?

A

An imam (leader) leads the Friday prayer and delivers a sermon (khutba). He will read from the Quran and talk about issues important to the community.

A

During the month of Ramadan (9th month of Muslim calender), people undertake a month-long fast. People abstain from food, liquid, tobacco, and sex from dawn to dusk. The purpose is to developed a personal discipline and remember the less fortunate.

A

Islam requires that a person undertake pilgrimage to Mecca and participate in multi-day rituals once in one’s lifetime. Many of the rituals of the Hajj commemorate the events of Abraham, Ishmael, Hagar, and Muhammad. For example, people wear white cloth to symbolize the robe of Abraham.
