What is a hijab?
The term used to describe the covering of a woman’s head and hair with a scarf
What is jihad?
Means “striving”. It is the struggle against disbelief within one’s self and writhing the world.
What is Khatam?
Term used for Muhammad the final and greatest prophet. Translates to “the seal of the prophets”
What is hijra?
Marks the beginning of the umma or “community of Islam.” When the community in Mecca moved to Yathrib in 622 ce.
What is the ka’ba?
the holiest place in the Islamic World, a large cube-shaped building inside the al-Masjid al-Haram mosque in Mecca
What is a caliph?
A community appointed religous and political leader, a successor.
What is tawhid?
The “oneness of God.”
What is shirk?
Associating of anything with God is shirk, the greatest sin in islam.
What is the Qur’an?
Is the eternal, uncreated, literal, and final word of God. It is revelation.
What is a surah?
It is a chapter
What is the umma?
the whole community of Muslims bound together by ties of religion. Community of Islam in broader terms.
What is the Fariha?
the first chapter of the Quran. Its seven verses are a prayer for the guidance, lordship and mercy of God.
What is Sunnism?
The majority of Muslims are Sunni. The word comes from “sunnah” or “tradition” following the tradition of Muhammad.
What is Shiism?
About 10-15% of the population today is Shi’a. is a branch of Islam which holds that the Islamic prophet Muhammad designated Ali ibn Abi Talib as his successor (Imam), most notably at the event of Ghadir Khumm.
What is Sufism?
Mystical Islam.
