What is Shahadah?

A

Shahadah is the declaration that there is no God but Allah.
Muhammad is his messenger or prophet.
Muslims believe they are created to praise and will recite 99 names to show devotion to him.
Muslims hope the shahadah is the first and last thing they will hear.
There are no images of Allah because he is believed to be beyond human understanding .

What is Salah?

A

The Qur’an tells muslims to pray at 5 special times each day.
Each prayer lasts about 10 minutes
Muslim men should pray at the Mosque but if not it must be somewhere clean.
They also clean themselves as a spiritual cleansing - wudu
Most muslims have a prayer mat to do this.
Muslims pray facing Makkah.

What is Zakat

A

All adult Muslims are expected to give 2.5% of their income once a year to charity.
Muslims believe everything is a gift from Allah so believe this is a way of purifying themselves from greed.
In Muslim countries Zakat is collected by government taxation

A

A

A

It is to Makkah, the holiest city in Islam.

What do people do at Hajj?

A

Everyone dresses in simple white robes to show all are equal before Allah.
There are three days of tasks.
Pilgrims walk around the Ka’bah seven times anti-clockwise.
During the third day there is a festival called Eid ul Adha.
It is the site of the first shrine built by Abraham and Ishmael.

What is Eid ul Fitr?

A

The festival at the end of Ramadan when the new moon appears.
A festival of fast breaking, decorations, money and presents.
People say Id Mubarak - blessed Eid
People attend Mosque before the festival begins.
People eats dates to sweeten their mouths after prayer.

What is Ramadan?

A

The ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
Muslims must not eat or drink during daylight.
Muslims believe this teaches them to appreciate What Allah has given them.
Muslims will try to read the Quran during Ramadan.
