Easter Flashcards
What is the significance of Palm Sunday?
Jesus entered Jerusalem on a donkey. He is welcomed like a king as the Son of David, the promised Messiah. People lay palms in front of him.
What Last Supper rituals are performed today?
Jesus carried out the first communion. He broke bread saying “this is my body” and shared the wine saying “ this is my blood shed for you”
Jesus also washed the disciples’ feet.
Why was Jesus praying in the garden of Gethsemane?
Jesus was sad and troubled.
He knew Judas was going to betray him.
He felt alone because the disciples fell asleep.
Jesus asked God to save him from suffering but would do God’s will.
Explain Judas’ betrayal
Jesus knew Judas was coming with the soldiers.
Judas betrayed Jesus by kissing him to show the soldiers who he was.
Judas was paid 30 pieces of silver.
As the soldiers grab Jesus Peter draws his sword and cuts off the ear of a servant. Jesus tells him to put it away and heals the servants ear.
Jesus says the scriptures say this has to happen this way.
Jesus is arrested and taken to Jerusalem.
Peter’s denial
Jesus is questioned by the high priest.
When asked if he is the Son of God, Jesus says “I am”
He is accused of blasphemy
Outside Peter waits. He is asked 3 times if he knows Jesus or is a disciple and 3 times Peter denies it.
The cock crows twice fulfilling Jesus’s prophecy.
What is the role of Pontius Pilate
Only the Roman Governor can sentence someone to death.
He is charged with treason against Rome.
Pilate doesn’t find him guilty.
Pilate is scared of starting a riot if Jesus is released.
He is a clever politician.
He lets the people decide because every Passover one prisoner is released.
The crowd call for Barabbus, a thief, to be released instead.
Pilate agrees with the crowd to crucify Jesus.
The meaning of the cross?
The Cross shows Jesus overcoming the suffering to be rewarded for overcoming sin.
Jesus died as a sacrifice for the world
Jesus trusted God in prayer when he realised he would suffer human death for sticking to God’s love.
What is the importance of the first witness to the risen Jesus?
The book of John says the empty tomb was discovered by Mary Magdalene. She believed and called for the disciples.
Simon Peter was told he was going to lead the church - feed my lambs and sheep
Thomas didn’t believe. Jesus appeared to him to say that people who don’t see him still believe.
What is the significance of the resurrection?
Why would disciples make it up - they were mocked and persecuted
Evidence of the gospel is very strong
Impossible that Jesus could survive crucifixion
Resurrection shows victory over human death and victory of God’s spirit
