When the values of democracy such as: accountability,representation,legitimacy and participation are not upheld.
How does low voter turnout impact democratic deficit?
Signals disengagement from the political process, weakening both legitimacy and participation.
Citizens feel disconnected or unrepresentative, which raises concerns about whether the democratic system genuinely reflect the will of the people , contribute to a sense that democracy isnt fully inclusive.
How does fptp affect representation and legitimacy?
Leads to outcome where a sig portion of votes do not directly impact the result, as only the candidate with the most votes in each area wins.
Votes r wasted, discouraging participation n creating a sense that the system doesn’t fairly mirror everyone’s mirrors, weaken legitimacy of gov bc they r often elected with less than 50 p of the vote.
How does an unelected House of Lords influence representation n accountability?
Adds to the democratic deficit bc the peoples voices r not translated politically into electing their representatives , no say on laws. This lack of democratic legitimacy can make people feel disconnected from parts of their govt,as they don’t have a direct way to influence or change the membership of the lords.
