Define irony
A contradiction or incongruity between appearance or expectation and reality
What is the difference between sarcasm and irony?
Irony refers to events, situations, and structural elements. Sarcasm refers to a person with a hurtful intent.
What is the difference between verbal irony and dramatic irony?
In dramatic irony, the person does not know they are wrong. In verbal irony, the person is aware of what he is saying.
Verbal irony
Discrepancy between what the speaker says and what he believes
Situational irony
A discrepancy between reality and expectation derived from the events
Dramatic irony
Discrepancy between a character’s perception and what the audience knows to be true
Tragic irony
Imperfect information that ends up being catastrophic and leads to the character’s downfall
Cosmic irony
Disparity between a character’s incorrect belief in his/her ability to shape their destiny and the audience’s recognition of a supernatural force over his fate
