Iron Play Level 3 Flashcards
Card01: Not a straight left arm. p. 95.
Most tour players bend the left elbow on BS. A slightly bent left arm won’t hurt your swing. Just make sure you don’t go beyond horizontal BS.
Remarks:
Card02: Drill 3/21 Play shots with feet together. This defines balance hitting ball w/o upper body.
Card03: “Thumbs up”. Your thumb points upward when your arm is horizontal. After impact when arm is horizontal your thumb is again up.
Refer to instructions P. 98. This drill is only using your right arm.
Remarks:
Card04: P. 99, Shots above your feet. Drill 3/23
This requires a more rounded swing. Choke up on grip. Use a more rounded BS and keep path inside to out DS.
Maintain straight left arm and shaft first 24”. This will make a better synchronized swing. P100.
Remarks:
Card05: Drill 3/24. When hitting iron shots all good players decrease loft at impact. This makes shaft lean toward target.
Make sure your right palm is angled down toward ball. Just using your right hand, your fingers SB pointing at ball on impact, with palm facing target. See picture P. 100.
Remarks:
Card06: Drill 3/25. Keep RH knee flexed throughout BS; stops hips turning more than 45 degrees.
By keeping right knee flexed throughout BS winds upper body even tighter.
Seniors may need to turn hips more than a tight upper body twist.
Remarks:
Card07: Launch angle: The trajectory of the shot in the first 20 yards. At the range experiment which clubs are best for going under tree branches.
Tiger Woods says for low trajectory shot, play ball more back in stance then FF with arms only up to rib cage. If you want a high shot, FF with hands over your head.
Remarks:
Card08: P. 104 Perfect iron shot. Picture of Tiger “whether its a 3 iron or a 9 iron, the rhythm of the swing must remain the same!”
Next: Pitching P106
