A
low haemoglobin for transport of oxygen due to an iron deficiency leading to a microcytic anaemia

A
Blood loss - menorrhagia or GI bleed
Poor diet or poverty
Malabsorption of Iron
Pregnancy

What are signs seen in IDA?
A
Brittle nails and Koilonychia
Atrophic glossitis
Stomatitis
Gastritis

What are risk factors of IDA?
A
Women Pregnancy Menorrhagia Vegans/vegetarian NSAIDs Coeliac Disease

Which blood test would you do for IDA?
A
Hb: low Haematocrit: low MCV: low MCH: low MCHC: low Ferritin: low Serum Iron: low TIBC: high Platelet count: normal or high

What would a blood film demonstrate in IDA?
A
Microcytic hypochromic cells (small and pale)
anisocytosis and poikilocytosis (varying size and shape)

How is IDA managed?
A
Ferrous Sulfate (oral iron replacement)
SE: nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea, constipation, black stools
