ANAEMIA OF CHRONIC DISEASE Flashcards
1
Q
What is ACD?
A
a common syndrome in which anaemia is due to inflammation-mediated reduction in RBC production
Causing a normocytic anaemia
2
Q
What causes ACD?
A
Poor use of iron in erythropoiesis, cytokines-induced shortening of RBC survival and decreased production and response to erythropoietin
CAUSES: chronic infection, rheumatoid, malignancy, renal failure, vasculitis
3
Q
What are the risk factors of ACD?
A
Autoimmune disorders Malignancy Acute of chronic infection Critical illness Major trauma Chronic disease
4
Q
What does blood test show in ACD?
A
Ferritin: increased Hb: low WBC: high Platelet count: high MCV: normal MCHC: normal or low
5
Q
What does blood film show in ACD?
A
Normocytic normochromic or hypochromic RBC
6
Q
How is ACD treated?
A
Treat underlying condition
Erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs)
SE: flu-like symptoms, hypertension, mild rise in platelet count
