Stages 1 of iron
Iron depletion and low iron supply to bone marrow and spleen <35 ug/L ( Peeling et al, 2007)
Stage 2 iron
Iron deficit erythropoises which means iron supply to the erythroid marrow is depleted below <20ug/L (Peeling et al, 2007)
Stage 3
This is process of iron anaemia where the supply of haemoglobin is depleted and falls below <12ug/L (Peeling et al,2007)
What is iron a functional component of?
Haemoglobin and myoglobin And is essential for the delivery of oxygen to body tissue. Low iron comprises the immune system
Recommendations
Consume haem food ( meat) in main meals 3-4 times a week and
Eat fortified bread and cereal
Take supplements (80-100mcg/d)
Avoid coffee and and wine as this can parent iron absorption
