Erogenics Flashcards
5-7mmol/L
Recommended of nitrate which can be consumed in beetroot, spinach, cabbage and broccoli
Nitrate NO
Is a vasodilator and helps blood pressure, it is consumed by athletes because it pumps muscle
Caffeine
1-3mg is recommended, previously it was 6mg but above 3mg showed no improvement to performance. Should be consumed 45-60 minutes before event
B-alanine
Is recommended to be consumed 5-6g. It is used to buffer the acidity caused during high intensity exercise. There is a 60% greater concentration on carsonine after 6 weeks and goes up to 80% after 10 weeks. The optimum dose if 3g a day for 6 weeks follows by maintainence of 1.2g
Creatinine monohydrate
Normal loading protocol is 20g for 5 days. It is now recommended that it should be 2-3g a day to prevent muscle tightening which can cause discomfort in athletes. Small doses can improve performance by Burke et al 2000
Lun et al 2012
A study found that 87% of 440 male and female athletes admitted to using erogenics
EFSA, 2015
It is classed as normal food and not a special food so does not have the same rules for medicine
Geyer et al 2004
Found that 15% of 634 supplements contained nanodrene which lead to failed drug testing
Risks of contaminants
Broken glass Lead Animal faeces Lead Other impurities
Nitrate peak time
Peaks after 2-3 hours and remains elevated for 6-8 hours
Lansley et al 2011
Found that when athletes were given 6mmol 2 and half hours before improved performance by 2.7%
Function of createnine monohydrate
Combines with phosphorus to fork phosphocreatenine in the muscle cells and causes water to move across the cells membrane. When concentrations were high water is drawn into the cells and thickens the muscle cell by 15%. Fast twitch fibres build up higher concentrations than slow twitch
Function of caffeine
is that is increases utilisation of fat as fuel and spared muscle glycogen and enhances performance and acts of nervous system and improves concerntration
MacIntosh, 1995
Found that there was a a 23 second improvement in swimmers when consuming caffeine
