Sources of Iron:
A
NON HAEM SOURCES = - Red kidney beans - Bread/cereals (fortified) - Potatoes - Oats HAEM SOURSES = - Eggs - Offal - Meat

Excess of Iron:
A
- Iron is stored as FERRITIN
- Too much can cause SIDEROSIS (deposition of iron in the lung)
- Occurs in africa from cooking pots

Deficiency of Iron:
A
- Brittle nails
- Fatigue
- Dizziness due to less haemoglobin to transport oxygen
- Pale skin
- IRON IS STORE IN LIVER/ SPLEEN/ BONE MARROW
- Iron deficiency anaemia
- Insufficient iron in blood stream = body uses bone marrow reserves
- When bone marrow reserves are low RBC’s do not form properly
