Bowel Disorder
- Constipation
- Cause:lack of dietary fibre (absorbs water, softens stools=easy to pass), insufficient water (softens)
- Symptoms: Stools harden+difficult to expel, infrequent bowel movements, stomach cramps, bloating
- Diet: 5-7 f/v skins, 2L water, Wholegrain>refined carbs
Osteoporosis
- skeletal disease, thin+porous=loss of bone mass=fragile,brittle over several years
- Symptoms: unexplained broken bones, curvature=loss of height, spine=stooped posture/hunting
- Risk factors: heredity: family genes decrease bone mass, diet: lack of calcium/vit D, exercise: strength
age: post menopausal= drop in oestrogen and calcium absorption, sex: small, thin, menopause
Diabetes Mellitus
Endocrine disorder
1: insulin dependant: pancreas doesnt produce
- hereditary, irreversible, injectable insulin+diet+exercise
2: non insulin dependent: insulin can’t be used
- later adulthood, reversible w/weight loss, oral med+inject insulin+diet/exercise
Symptoms: frequent urination, tired, blurry, thirsty
Diet: balanced meals stabilise blood, fibre+low GI food (slow-release)
Hypoglycaemia: too much insulin/little carbs = glucose prevents diabetic coma (dizzy)
Hyperglycaemia: opposite -> take insulin
Coeliac Disease
Auto immune condition: immune system mistakes gluten as threat
Antibodies attack villi = flatten = districts ability to absorb nutrient = malnourished
Symptoms: nausea, bloating, tiredness, weight loss
Small business and home enterprises
High quality: local ingridients, artisan techniques = superior taste over mass produced
Wide range: dairy, baked goods, beverages- organic ingredients = perceived as healthier
Ireland reputation: more small business exports = Ireland’s rep as food nation = more sales
Employment: support small community/employment/local suppliers
Changes in Irish diet
Cultural changes (travel), national events, availability(imports), national events, stable foods (variety)
