This body makes up the Legislatures (Unicameral) of the Islamic Republic, created by the constitution in 1906. This body is made of 290 seats with some reserved for religious minorities, women are also allowed to hold seats, the members of this body run for 4-year terms. Their powers were later weekend by constitutional amendments.
Majlis
The elite branch that operates abroad
Quds Force
Established by Khomeini as a parallel military force to the shah’s armed forces; protects the republic
Revolutionary Guard
a religious degree originally required to have to be elected but now it is not required
Seminary Degree
The religious framework in Iran, governs the day to day lives of Muslims.
Islamic Sharia Law
Now is the Islamic Republic morality police, and was created during the Iran-Iraq War.
Basij
Body of 12 male members which vet candidates for elections, reviews bills passed by the Majlis, and controls elections.
Guardian Council
This person is head of Judiciary branch in Iran. This person is appointed by the Supreme Leader. This person nominates half (6) of the members of the guardian council which is the approved by the Maijlis.
Chief of Justice.
Leading Islamic jurist that interprets Sharia law & religious documents, “determines the interests of Islam”, and links the three branches of government together.

Highest official representing democratic principles
President
The ability to approve candidates.
Vet
Considered to be pillar of the state. Legal system is based on religious law. No Judicial Review. Can nominate half of the Guardian Council.
Judiciary
Jurist’s guardianship; Idea instituted by Khomeini. Overarching authority, granted to the senior clergy for different government institutions.
Velayat e-faqih
Was made to speed up Processes; Can create Legislation; 32 members appointed by the Supreme Leader
Expediency Council
Supreme Leader of Iran from 1989-present, succeeding Khomeini.
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei
Permits families to demand blood money or compensation to the victims families from those responsible for someone’s death
Retribution Law
A foreign policy advisory body that advises the president.
National Security Council
Conducts day to day governance. Initiates most news laws and budget, but must submit to Parliament for approval/modification

Veleyat-e-faqih gives (____) political and religious power in Iran
Clerics
Have the right to remove supreme leader.They are directly elected by people to 8 year terms.
Assembly of Experts
He was the 1st Supreme Leader of Iran, holding the position from 1979 till his death in 1989. He was the leader of the Iranian Revolution established by the Islamic Republic.
