Mechanism of Action
A
- Antagonizes the acetylcholine receptors on the bronchial smooth muscle, producing bronchodilation

Indications
A
- Asthma
- Bronchospasm associated with COPD

Contraindications
A
- Closed angle glaucoma
- Bladder neck obstruction
- Prostatic hypertrophy
- Known sensitivity, including peanuts, soybeans, and atropine or atropine derivatives

Adverse Effects
A
- Paradoxical acute bronchospasm

Administration
A
- Adult: 0.5 mg every 6-8 hours nebulized

Special Considerations
A
- Not typically used as the sole medication in the treatment of acute exacerbation of asthma. Commonly administered after a beta agonist.
- Take care to prevent aerosol spray from coming in contact with the eyes as this can cause temporary blurring of the vision.
