Bronchodilator, beta/sympathetic agent

Mechanism of Action
A
- Binds & stimulates beta2 adrenergic receptors, resulting in relaxation of bronchial smooth muscles.

Indications
A
- Asthma
- Bronchitis with bronchospasm
- COPD
- Allergic reactions

Contraindications
A
- Angioedema
- Sensitivity to albuterol or levalbuterol
- Use with caution in lactating patients, cordiovascular disorders, & cardiac arrhythmias

Adverse Effects
A
- Hyperglycemia
- Hypokalemia
- Palpitations, Sinus Tachycardia, anxiety, tremors
- Nausea, vomiting, throat irritation, dry mouth
- Hypertension, headache, paradoxical bronchospasm

Administration
A
- Adult: 2.5 mg (0.5 mL of .5% solution diluted in 2.5 mL NS) delivered over 5-15 minutes - inhaled only.
- Pediatrics >12: 0.15 mg/kg every 20 minutes

Special Considerations
A
- Beta blockers may blunt the effects of Albuterol
