IPA MSK physical exam Flashcards
What are some types of mechanical falls
outstretched hand- wrist/elbow fratures
Slip and fall from curb (hip/ankle fractures)
Fall from bicycle
Overuse mechanisms of injury
Tennis, golf, weightlifting, cooking/cleaning, repetative tasks
Sudden injuries
over-lifting
extreme supports
trauma
If there is an obvious deformity on an injured limb, what do you not do?
Do NOT test motion or strength- test pulses and neurological status- could make worse
If you see edema what are you thinking of on exam
fracture or ligament injury
Check compartment
If someone feels pain when they move their wrist, but not when the provider moves the wrist, what injury is this?
Muscular- provider can do passive motion
What are synonyms for anterior
ventral/palmar
What are synonyms for posterior
dorsal/plantar
Lateral and medial terms for arm (think Big forearm bones)
Ulnar= medial
Radial= lateral
Edema vs effusion
Edmea- swelling
Effusion- Fluid in joint
Effusion vs Hemarthrosis
Effusion- fluid, synovial fluid in the joint
Hemarthrosis- Blood in the joint
CT scan vs MRI for fracture
CT scan will not show bleeding from bone, MRI will.
Big for hip fractures- MRI shows bleeding (fracture) from bone.
If a patient has a decrease in AROM why do you do PROM
is it an issue other than soft tissue (blockage, can’t go back further)
Hard stop/bony endpoint
- Need to say why less range of motion- Boney block vs soft tisuse
Where do supination and pronation occur / in which joint?
Motion occurs at your elbow
- Motion occurs in hand, but the rotation is in elbow
Which joint create ulnar and radial deviation
- Wrist
- Ulnar/medial
- Radial/To Thumb and laterally
