Ionophores and Implants Flashcards
What are ionophores?
Carboxylic antibiotics
From Strep and sub-species
-Not medically important
How do ionophores benefit the host animal?
-Increase efficiency of energy metabolism of ruminal bacteria
-Improve nitrogen metabolism of rumen bacteria
-Retard digestive disorders from abnormal rumen fermentation
What is the mode of action of ionophores?
Disruption of cation transport in the cell
k and na
What are some examples of ionophores?
Monensin- Rumensin - feedlot
Bocatec - lasalocid - dairy
What effects occur due to the ionophores?
Change in VFA ratio - increase propionate - more efficient
Lactic Acid - decrease producers of it
Coccidiostat - prevent coccidia
Decrease bloat risk - slime producing bacteria
Flies - decrease in feces
Tryptophan - decrease conversion into thing that causes atypoical intersital pneumonia
How do ionophores effect feed intake, daily gain and feed efficency?
Decrease concentrate intake, increase roughage, increase ADG on roughage and increase feed efficacy
Who id monensin most toxic to?
Horses, sheep and cows
How can you feed ionophores?
TMR, Mineral Mix (50-200mg/hd/day)
What groups benefit from ionophores?
Feedlot, dairy and pasture cattle
What drug can increase ADG but is illegal?
Clenbuterol
T/F Growth implants are a no brainer if trying to make more?
True
What is in growth implants?
Estradiol, Testosterone, Progesterone (Work at AP to increase Growth hormone)
What are some brands of implants?
Ralgro, Synovex, Encore
When should you use implants?
Suckling calves (>45days)
Stockers/Backgrounders
Feedlot
When should you not use a implant?
Any animal kept for reproduction
No male that already has testicles
