What are the two classes of antifinflammatories?
Steroids and NSAIDS
What are the two steroids comonly used?
Dexamethasone and Isoflupredone
What is the indication for each steroid?
Dexamethasone- Inflammation, labor induction and ketosis
Isoflupredone - Ketosis and udder edema
When should dexamethasone be given for pregnancy induction?
150 days or more in combination with prostaglandin
What is the labor induction dose?
25mg or 12cc syringe
How long after injection should it take to educe pregnancy?
24-48 hours (prostaglandin will make it faster)
Can you induce labor with Isoflupredone?
No, safe for pregnant cow
What are some examples of NSAIDS?
Aspirin, Flunixin, Meloxicam, Transdermal Banamine
What is aspirin labeled for?
Inflammation
Should you use aspirin in food producing species anymore?
NO, FDA doesn’t approve (no lactating cow)
What are the forms you can get flunixin in?
Injectable (IV) or transdermal
What are indications for flunixin?
Inflammation, fever, pain (transdermal)
What are indications for meloxicam?
Inflammation and fever
How do you give meloxicam and what is the withdrawl?
Oral - 96hr milk and 21 days meat
What should you remember about flunixin?
Irritating to tissues and should only be given IV to prevent irritation
What is the only product with a pain label?
Flunixin (transdermal)
What are some things that are more likely to occur if flunixin is given?
DA, Metritis and retained placenta
Should you mix flunixin with other products?
No it will precipitate out
In heavy pregnant animals why may the administration of flunixin be harmful?
prostaglandins are released by the placenta and help with giving birth
Why are we able to use Meloxicam even though its not labeled for many food animal species?
Only pill for inflammation so owners can administer this one
Should you use meloxicam in lactating dairy cows?
no
When should you give meloxicam to have max effect when dehorning?
12 hours prior
