Ionic, Covalent, & Metallic Bonding Flashcards
0
Q
Ionic bonding
A
The electrostatic attraction between oppositely charged ions.
(Held together by a giant ionic lattice)
1
Q
Ion
A
An electrically charged particle formed by the loss or gain of one or more electrons from an atom/group of atoms.
2
Q
Electrical conductivity
A
Substances conduct electricity when ions or electrons are free to move.
3
Q
Boiling and melting points
A
Are a measure of the energy required to separate the particles in a substance. Bond type is significant.
4
Q
Metallic bonding
A
The strong attraction between positive metal ions and the “sea of delocalised negatively charged electrons”.
Or
Forces of attraction between a sea of delocalised electrons and a regular array of cations.
