Atoms Flashcards
Mass number (A)
The sum of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom.
Atomic number (Z)
The number of protons in the nucleus of an atom of that element.
Protons, Electrons, Neutrons
Proton: +1, 1
Electron: -1, 1/1836
Neutron: 0, 1
Isotopes
Atoms of the same element with different numbers of neutrons.
Ion
A positively or negatively charged atom or (covalently bonded) group of atoms (a molecular ion).
Relative isotopic mass
The mass of an atom of an isotope compared with 1/12th of the mass of an atom of C-12.
Relative atomic mass, Ar
The weighted mean mass of an atom of an element compared with 1/12th of the mass of an atom of C-12.
Relative molecular mass, Mr
The weighted mean mass of a molecule compared with 1/12th of the mass of an atom of C-12.
Relative formula mass
The weighted mean mass of a formula unit compared with 1/12th of the mass of an atom of C-12.
Avogadro constant, Na
The number of atoms per mole of the C-12 isotope (6.022*10^23 mol^-1).
Mole
The amount of any substance containing as many particles as there are C atoms in exactly 12g of the C-12 isotope.
Molar mass, M
The mass per mole of a substance.
Units: gmol^-1
Empirical formula
Simplest whole number ratio of atoms of each element present in a compound.
Molecule
Small group of atoms held together by covalent bond.
Molecular formula
The actual number of atoms of each element in a molecule.
Molar volume
The volume per mole of a gas.
Units: dm^-3mol^-1
At rtp, the molar volume is ~24.0.
Concentration
Of a solution is the amount of solute, in mol, dissolved per 1dm^-3 of solution.
