Alkenes Flashcards
Pi bond
A double covalent bond.
- the reactive part of the C=C
- its former above and below the plane of the 2 C atoms bonded together by the sigma bond.
Sigma bond
A single covalent bond.
Addition reaction
A reactant is added to an unsaturated molecule (C=C) to form a saturated bond.
Electrophile
- an atom/group that is attracted to an e- rich centre/ e- rich atom
- it accepts a pair of e- to form a new covalent bond
Hydrogenation of ethene
Catalyst: Ni
Temperature: 150 C
Pressure: 1atm
Hydration of ethene
Catalyst: phosphoric acid, H3PO4
Temperature: high
Pressure: high
Markovnikov’s rule
The H adds on to the C that has the most H’s already bonded to it.
Electrophilic addition
An addition reaction where an electrophile is attracted to an e- rich centre/atom, & accepts a pair of e- to form a new covalent bond.
Carbocation
An organic ion in which C has a +ve charge - unstable!
Curly arrow
A symbol in mechanisms to show movement of a pair of e- in covalent bond making/breaking.
Polymer
A long molecular chain, built up from monomer units.
Monomer
A small molecule that combines with many others to form a polymer.
Addition polymerisation
Unsaturated alkane monomers add onto a growing polymer chain to form an addition polymer.
Repeat unit
The specific arrangement of atoms occurring again and again in a polymer.
