Ionic Compounds Flashcards
Compound
2 or more elements chemically combined.
Ionic Compounds
Made up of negative and positive ions that have resulted from the transfer of electrons from a metal to a non metal. Valence electrons are lost or gained to form a full octet.
Electrolytes
Substances that will dissolve in water and conduct electricity.
How do Ionic compounds form solutions that will conduct electricity?
Ionic compounds form solutions that will conduct electricity because they are made up of charged ions. The compounds dissolve and the ions separate from each other.
How are ionic compound held together?
Ions in ionic compounds are held together by the electrostatic force between oppositely charged
bodies. In other words, positive and negative ions attract.
Ions
An atom with an overall charge. To become stable, atoms lose or gain electrons to fill their valence shells.
What are the two types of ions?
Cations- positively charged
Antions- negatively charged
Characteristics of Ionic Compounds
contain a metal & non-metal.
• Metal LOSES electrons, non-metal TAKES electrons.
• A strong ionic bond forms.
• Conduct electricity when melted or dissolved.
• High melting point.
• Hard and Brittle.
