Chemical Reactions Flashcards
Chemical reactions types
Decomposition, synthesis, single displacement, double displacement.
Combustion Reaction
The reaction of a substance (often a fuel) with oxygen to produce oxides and energy.
Synthesis Reaction
Two or more reactants combine to form a new product.
Decomposition reaction
One compound breaks down into two or more simpler compounds or elements.
Single displacement Reaction
Involve an element and a compound as reactants
One element replaces (displaces) another element from a compound. Metals will replace other metals, non-metals will replace other non-metals.
Double Displacement Reaction
Elements in different compounds can switch places
Metals will trade places with other metals. Non-metals will exchange places with other non-metals.
Complete combustion
The fuel burns totally to release the energy they contain. It occurs if oxygen is plentiful and the products formed are always carbon dioxide and water. The flame produced is blue in color.
Incomplete combustion
The fuel is not completely burned to release energy.
It occurs if the oxygen supply is limited. The products are carbon dioxide, carbon, as well as carbon dioxide and water. The flame produced is orange in color.
Carbon monoxide gas (CO(g))
Colorless, odorless, and is a poisonous gas.
Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning
Headache, nausea, dizziness, and eventually, death.
