IONIC BONDS Flashcards
ion
an atom with an electric charge. To have an electric charge it has to lose or gain an electron.
When atom LOSES an electron, does it have a positive or negative charge? Why?
when it loses an electron the atom has more protons so it has a Positive electric charge.
When atom GAINS an electron, does it have a positive or negative charge? Why?
When it gains an electron the atom has more electrons, so it has a Negative charge.
Ionic bond
the attraction between a positive ion and a negative ion. Usually form when metals and nonmetals combine.
ionic compound
a compound made up of positive and negative ions.
polyatomic ions
poly (a lot)…….Ions that have more than one atom.
chemical formla
a group of symbols that show how much of each element is in a compound.
example: the formula of magnisium chloride is:
MgCI2…..there are 2 chloride ions for every 1 Magnesium.
subscript
tells you the ratio of elements in the compound.
example:MgCI2, the ratio is 1 (Mg) to 2 (CI) 1 to 2
What does the electric charge equal to when ionic compounds are formed?
zero
When you name an ionic compound, which ion comes first, the positive or negative?
1st you write the POSITIVE ion then the Negative.
example;Magnesium Chloride
Properties of Ionic Compounds are?
- they are hard brittle crystals
- they have high melting points.
- When dissolved in water or melted, they conduct(make) electricity.
crystal
the positive and negative ions form an orderly pattern called crystal
