Ion Testing Flashcards
Test for group 7 ions
acidified silver nitrate (AgNO3)
why do you use nitric acid instead of HCL when testing for group 7 ions
HCl includes chlorine which would react to make a white precipitate- a false result
Fluoride Ion observation in H+/AgNO3
No visible change
Chloride Ion observation in H+/AgNO3
white precipitate
Bromide ion observation in H+/AgNO3
cream precipitate
Iodide ion observation in H+/AgNO3
yellow precipitate
Sulphate ion test (SO4 2-)
Add BaCl2, forms BaSO4 which makes a white precipitate
Test for hydroxide ion (OH-)
Add CuSO4 to form Cu(OH)2 which makes a blue precipitate
CO3 2- test (x2)
HCl- efferveces
HNO3- efferveces
What order should you test for ions in?
CSI
Carbonates, sulphates, Ides (Halides, OH-)
Mg2+ test with NaOH
White
Ca2+ test with NaOH
white
Sr2+ test with NaOH
No visible change
Ba2+ test with NaOH
No visible change
Mg2+ test with H2SO4
No visible change
