IOD 2180 Drug Recognition Flashcards
What is “Pharmacology”?
The drugs effect on the body and mind
What are the two types of drug dependence?
Physical dependence = body requires the drug to prevent physical withdrawal symptoms (ie. heroin users)
Psychological dependence = craving or compulsion to use a drug brought about by the drug’s reinforcement potential (ie. crack users)
What are the primary narcotic and non-narcotic substances within the depressant classification?
Narcotic depressants = drugs derived from the opium poppy and their synthetic equivalents
-Opium
-Morphine
-Codeine
-Heroin (Schedule I)
-Dilaudid
-Oxycodone
-Demerol & Methadone
Non-narcotic depressants
-Tranquilizers (Xanax/Valium)
-Alcohol (synergism increases actions of other depressants)
-Barbiturates (phenobarbital, butabarital, and amobarbital)
Note: Barbiturate affects are similar to alcohol intoxication but there is no odor of alcohol
What are the affects of depressants?
Decrease (slow down) activity of CNS
Relieve pain (analgesic)
Induce sleep (hypnotic)
Relieve anxiety (sedative)
Reduce physical activity and reaction time
Develop tolerance requiring more and more of the drug
produces physical dependence as withdrawal causes physical conditions similar to the flu
What are the affects of stimulants?
Increase activity of CNS
Increase heart rate, blood pressure, and body temperature
Relieve fatigue
Reduce appetite
Dilate pupils of the eyes
Cause primarily psychological dependence
What are the two categories within the stimulant classification?
Cocaine (Schedule II)
-Cocaine HCL
-Cocaine Base (also known as crack)
Amphetamines (Schedule II)
-Amphetamines (Ritalin, Adderall, Dexedrine)
-Methamphetamine
-Methcathinone
What are the 5 drugs within the hallucinogenic classification?
Cannabis (Marijuana products with THC/hash oil)
Peyote/Mescaline (cactus flowers)
Hallucinongenic Mushrooms
Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD)
Phencyclidine (PCP)
What are the affects of hallucinogens?
Distortion of physical senses (“sensory crossover”)
Detachment from reality (“Out of body”)
Poor perception of time and distance
Psychosis
What are the 3 classifications of drugs of abuse?
DHS
Depressants
Hallucinogens
Stimulants
