IOD 2070 Controlled Substance Identification Flashcards
What are the physical characteristics of the following common drugs?
Asian White Heroin
Mexican Brown Heroin
Black Tar Heroin
Cocaine HCL
Crack Cocaine/Cocaine Base
Methamphetamine/Crystal Methamphetamine
Marijuana
Hashish
Ecstasy (MDMA)
Fentanyl
Asian White Heroin = bright/flat white to tan/grey, strong smell of vinegar, granulation similar to talcum powder, bitter taste
Mexican Brown Heroin = brown to brick red, granulation similar to brown sugar, vinegar smell and bitter taste, absorbs moisture and clumps together to form tiny balls in the container
Black Tar Heroin = fresh has consistency of roofing tar, when dries becomes hard, grey/black rock-like substance, vinegar smell and bitter taste
Cocaine HCL = white powdery substance
Crack Cocaine/Cocaine Base = waxy, granular, off-white chunky rock-like substance or clear crystalline substance, not water soluble
Methamphetamine/Crystal Methamphetamine = white/grey powdery substance or rock salt and water soluble if crystal meth
Marijuana = green/brown leafy material
Hashish = THC spores that have been removed and compressed, hard rock like substance green/black and smells like marijuana
Ecstasy (MDMA) = usually tablet form, colors and logos vary
Fentanyl = white to off white powder
What are the types of drug testing kits?
Reagent pouches
Reagent aerosols
NIK ID swabs
What is sequential drug testing?
A set sequence of field tests reagents used to test an unknown substance to eliminate all but one possibility
Are field tests considered conclusive?
No, they are presumptive identification for establishing/solidifying PC of narcotics violation
must be sent to forensic lab for conclusive testing
What are the following common reagents and their uses?
Mayer’s Reagent
Marquis Reagent
Scott’s Modified
Nitric Acid
Sodium Nitroprusside
Mecke’s (Modified) Reagent
Mandelin Reagent
Duquenois-Levine Reagent
KN Reagent (Fast Blue B Salt)
NIK Drug ID Swab
Mayer’s Reagent = test for general narcotics (white/cream gelatinous result is positive result for a narcotic)
Marquis Reagent = test for opiates and amphetamine compounds
Scott’s Modified = test for cocaine HCL and cocaine base (crack)
Nitric Acid = general screening test, confirmation for the presence of opium alkaloids
Sodium Nitroprusside = test for methamphetemine (confirmation for MDMA (ecstasy) if Marquis Reagent formed purple/black color)
Mecke’s (Modified) Reagent = test for heroin (MDMA may be indicated)
Mandelin Reagent = confirming test for amphetamines and presumptive test for Methadone
Duquenois-Levine Reagent = test for marijuana, hashish, hash oil, and THC
KN Reagent (Fast Blue B Salt) = test for marijuana, hashish, hash oil, and THC
NIK Drug ID Swab = chemically treated towellete to test for the suspected substance being tested
Specific questions regarded tests:
How much drug do you load into a test kit?
Which drug test kit do you use to start a sequential test?
What test kit for suspected cocaine?
What test kit for suspected meth?
When meth tests positive, what color does it turn after breaking the last ampoule?
Load amount of substance the instructions indicate and follow the instructions accurately
Mayers Reagent to start a sequential test
Scott’s Modified Reagent for cocaine
Sodium Nitroprusside for meth
pink over blue
