Invertebrates Flashcards
What is cephalization?
Evolution of a head at the anterior end with sense organs and a brain.
What are the benefits of cephalization?
Exploration, predation is easier and allows to locate a mate
Cnidarians
Jellyfish and corals
Molluscs
Oyster and snal
Annelids
Earthworm
Arthropods
Crustaceans and insects
What is segmentation and in what animals can it be seen?
Small compartments identical to each other. Can be seen in annelids and arthropods.
What is an open circulatory system?
Blood and interstitial fluid are allowed to mix. Animals with this circulatory system are very small so that blood can easily diffuse from one part of the body to another.
What is an exoskeleton?
It is made of chitin and acts as a waterproof barrier. Soft around the joints. Molting.
What is metamorphosis?
It can be divided into incomplete and complete. It is the process of development from birth into adult. Changes in nutrition and behavior.
Why are arthropods the most successful phylum?
- Jointéd legs that allow motility
- Exoskeleton that protects the body
- Sensory organs
- Complex behavior
- Metamorphosis
- Trachea
