Invertebrates Flashcards
Why are invertebrates important?
They are pollinators, help in the decaying process
what are invertebrates?
They are bugs, They lack a backbone, they account for 95% of all species, very important.
What is the phylum of invertebrates?
Arthropoda
What are the external characteristic of a arthropoda?
Exoskeleton made out of chitin, Body segments are grouped into specialized regions called Tagmata. They have jointed appendages (could have special functions)
What is the four subphylums of arthropoda?
Hexapods, chelicerata, myriapods, crustacea (don’t really need to know)
Do arthropods molt their chitin layer?
Yes
What are the three segments seen in the body?
Head, thorax, abdomen.
when there are two segments in the body what are they called?
cephalothorax
and abdomen
Miropod Centipede
Have mangy segments, with centipedes each segment has two legs, predator, flat body
Miropod millipede
Hove many segments each segment had four legs, they are decomposers, slow moving
Chelicerata’s
Spiders, ticks and mites, very important for the food chain. They are predators, and vectors for diseases. They will have eight legs, no antenna, two main body segments (cephalorax, abdomen) multiple eyes, some have silk producing glands, fangs and pincers
what is the class Insecta good for? (hexapoda subphylum)
Crucial in pollination, decomposition and as a food source,
Insecta Features
They have three segments (Head, thorax, abdomen). Their head has compound eyes. antena, thorax has legs (6), and two pairs of wings (4 wings in total) Mouth parts are for biting, sipping nectar or piercing.
Within Insecta you have what type of category
True bugs, they have very specific features that they must all have
which insects start as aquatic insects?
Dragonflies, damselflies, stonefly, and caddisfly, this is important because of management because we have to focus on water instead of land.
What is metamorphosis? And what category does this?
Hexapods, Its when they exist in a specific form and then once it has enough energy it will molt into another form. (caterpillar to butterfly)
Why is metamorphism important for ID and Management?
It is an important way to identify the species
Biphasic
Metamorphism species who basically lives two different lives with different predators and food
Benthic or Macroinvertebrates
Fresh Water invertebrates (streams rivers etc), They are bIphasic (Two phases) Need water (Without that they don’t exists and we loose the lower end of the food chain. Trophic cascade (food web collapses)
How are benthic macroinvertebrates classified?
They are classified based on how tolerant they are too pollutants. Its an easy way to tell if water is polluted (you will see or not see the species dependant on how healthy the water is)
Pollutant Intolerant
Cold clear streams, high oxygen (Stone flies)
Moderately pollution intolerant
Dragon flies and damsal flies and scuds (order arthropoda also a crustacean)
Pollutant tolerant
even in heavily polluted waters you will most likely see these species. (Snails -Gastropoda, no biphotic)
Hexapods
Three segments (head, thorax, abdomen) and three pairs of legs (6 total)
