What is intussusception
Where the bowel invaginates or telescopes itself, folding inwards which thickens the overall size of the bowel and narrows the lumen
Associated conditions with intussusception
Concurrent viral illness, HSP, CF, intestinal polyps, meckles diverticulum
Presentation of intussusception
Abdominal pain, pale, lethargic, unwell, bilious vomiting, intestinal obstruction, sausaged shape mass on RUQ on palpation
Type of abdominal pain
Severe, colicky pain where the infant reacts in bursts from the contractions
Late symptom
Red current jelly stool
Management of intussusception
US or contrast enema, therapeutic enemas can be used to try and reduce intussusception.
Contrast water or air are pumped into colon to force the folded bowel out into normal position.
Surgical reduction may be necessary
Complications of intussusception
Obstruction, gangrenous bowel, perforation, death
Common age for intussusception
Mostly 6-12 months, can be up to 36 months
