What is biliary atresia
A
Congenital condition where a section of bile duct is either narrowed or absent

What does biliary atresia lead to
A
Cholestasis where bile cannot be transported from liver to bowel. Prevents excretion of conjugated bilirubin

Presentation of biliary atresia
A
Shortly after birth with significant jaundice due to high conjugated bilirubin levels

Management of biliary atresia
A
Kasai portoenterostomy involveds attaching a section of the small intestine to the opening of the liver where the bile duct normally attaches
