Presentation of coeliac disease
Failure to thrive, diarrhoea, fatigue, mouth ulcers, weight loss, anaemia, dermatitis, herpetiformis
Associations with coeliac disease
Type 1 diabetes, also linked with thyroid disease, autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cirrhosis, PSC, Downs
Which gene is responsible
HLA-DQ2 (90%)
Who else is tested if child is diagnosed
All first degree relatives are tested
Diagnosis of coeliac disease
Anti-TTG antibodies
Endomysial antibodies
Deaminated gliadin peptide antibodies (anti-DGPs)
All checked while on gluten diet
Exclude IgA deficiency
Complications of coeliac disease
Vitamin deficiency
Anaemia
Osteoporosis
Ulcerated jejunitisenteropathy-associated T cell lymphoma of the intestine
Non-hodgkin lymphoma
Small bowel adenocarcinoma
Treatment of coeliac disease
Life long gluten free diet
Checking coeliac antibodies over time and they should decrease if there is good response
