Intubation Flashcards
Why do we intubate Patients?
To protect patients, people and the planet
How does intubation benefit patients?
To deliver anaesthetic gases directly patients lungs
Allows delivery of oxygen directly into lungs
To protect the patients airways
Loss of protective airway reflexes puts anaesthetised patients at risk of pulmonary aspiration
Unable to swallow or cough
Allows use of capnography
Facilitates manual or mechanical ventilation
How does intubation benefit people?
Allows us to prevent hazardous gases from entering the room
Reduces gas wastage - economical
How does intubation benefit the planet?
Minimises anaesthetic gas wastage allowing us to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Where does an ET tube lie within a patient?
Passes through patients larynx
Sits in trachea before the bifurcation
What are the considerations of using an ET tube?
Use the correct size
Not too large to cause trauma
Not to small to allow leakage of gases
