What is important in emergency situations?
CHECKLISTS!
○ Save time
○ Prevent missing important steps
Stabilise and support patient whilst making a plan
○ Basic diagnostics undertaken
○ Oxygenation
○ Analgesia - calms animal if in pain
Sedative effects
Rarely require alpha-2 agonist
○ IV cannulas - take blood for basic panel
○ Ultrasound/imaging
Induction of Emergency Patients
Must be prepared to induce immediately
Check before starting
Pre-oxygenate
Have all equipment prepared
Secure IV access and have fluids running
Use SAFE combination of drugs
Benzodiazepine + opioid + alfaxalone/ketamine
AVOID alpha-2 agonists, ACP and propofol
Fast acting opioid can massively reduce amount of induction agent needed
Very sick animals might not need induction agent
