Introductory Flashcards
Continuum Mechanics
The mechanical behavior of solid and fluids on a scale in which their physical properties can be defined by continuous or piecewise continuous functions
Biomechanics
Mechanics applied to biology. A specific focus is continuum mechanics applied to physiology.
Constitutive Law
Describes properties of a particular material
Lagrangian Conservation of Mass
The mass of a material in the initial material volume element remains constant as the element deforms.
Eularian Conservation of Mass
The rate of mass flowing in is equal to the mass that flows out of the region
Conservation of Linear Momentum
In an isolated system, the total momentum of two or more bodies acting upon each other remains constant unless an external force is applied
Conservation of Angular Momentum
Physical property of a spinning system will spin constantly unless acted upon by an external torque.
Conservation of Energy
The rate of kinetic and internal energy in an object is equal to the rate of mechanical work, surface traction, and heat acting on the object.
Tensors
Mathematical objects used to describe physical properties. Its a generalization of scalars and vectors.
