Bone and Skeletal Tissues Flashcards
Cortical / Cortical Bone
The dense outer surface of the bone that forms a protective layer around the internal cavities
Cancellous Bone
Spongy, porous, honey-comb like structures of the bone
Ossification
Bone Formation
Osteoblasts
Builds bone
Osteoclasts
Removes bone
Osteon
Vascular tunnel of the bone formed by osteoclast-rich tissue
Short Bones
Cancellous in the center, compact recoating
Flat Bones
Two thin layers of compact with cancellous in between them. Think sandwich
Long Bones
Have bone marrow in the middle
Basic Multi-cellular Unit (BMU)
Promotes bone remodeling in response the microcracks
Hematoma formation
1st Step of bone repair. Forms a blood clot around the damaged bone
Callus formation
2nd Step of bone repair. Tissues form on site, connecting the broken ends of the bone.
Callus Ossification
3rd Step of bone repair. Cancellous bone starts forming in cracks
Remodeling of bone
4th Step of bone repair. Fracture site is replaced by compact bone.
Osteoporosis
Bone becomes spongy due to loss of bone mass. Cancellous sicko mode
