2
Q

what are the advantages and diadvantages of referral labs

A

adv:high quality equiptment and specially trained staff- better validity of results
-can perform difficult/ unusual teste
-lab often employ veterinary pathologies who can give more medical information from test results
disadvantage:
-takes longer time to get results, delays diagnosis
-storage and transportation measures needs to be considered
-may not be readily available
-often more expensive for client

Q

advantages and disadvantages of in house testing

A

adv:
-get results fast, reach diagnosis fast
-samples fresh when examined so less artidacts or unusable material
-good revenue for clinic
-often cheaper for clinics
disadv:
-equiptment expensive to purchase
-requires staff to be trained to run and maintain equiptment
-need dedicated space to be allocated for machines

Q

what affects quality of results

A

Quality of sample (Pre-analytical)
-Sample collection, handling, storage, dispatching

  1. Quality of analysis (Analytical)
    -Instruments/Equipments –maintained, calibrated?
    -Reagents
    -Lab technique- protocol, operator skill
    Suitability for species
  2. Quality of patient’s lab records (Post-analytical)
    -Transcription errors when reporting
