Introduction to the cardiovascular system (self-directed) Flashcards
What is left sided cardiac failure often associated with
Raised blood pressure (hypertension) or ischaemic heart disease
How does left sided cardiac failure affect the lungs
Blood backs up in lungs and leads to pulmonary oedema which makes breathing difficult (initially only during exercise, but progresses to occur at rest)
What sided failure causes orthopnoea and paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnoea
Left sided
Why is right sided failure associated with lower output
Due to raised pressure in lungs or valvular disease
What is the consequence of right sided failure
Blood backs up in the tissues, leading to peripheral oedema, ascites (abnormal fluid buildup in abdomen), and liver enlargement
What is atherosclerosis a disease of
Larger arteries (common in coronary and carotid arteries)
Symptoms of atherosclerosis in coronary arteries
Angina (chest pain)
Symptoms of atherosclerosis in the carotid artery
Slurred speech, muscle weakness
Symptoms of atherosclerosis in renal artery
Hypertension (renal stenosis)
Symptoms of atherosclerosis in arms-legs
Muscular pain on exercise
Consequence of hypertension in heart
- Left ventricular hypertrophy
- Heart failure
- MYocardial ischaemia/infarction
Consequence of hypertension in brain
Stroke
Consequence of hypertension in aorta
Aneurysm
Consequence of hypertension in aorta
Aneurysm
Consequence of hypertension in kidney
Renal failure
