Introduction to Pharmacology Flashcards
Pharmacology
This is the study of drug action and its fate in the body
What is a drug
There are two definitions of a drug.
Definition #1:
This is a compound or substance that is taken, for purposes outside of normal function that has biochemical/physiological effects that can be therapeutic
Definition #2:
this anything that it is used for the treatment, cure, diagnosis of a disease
Classification of drugs
natural; the active ingredient is extracted from the natural substance (ie flower)
Semi-synthetic: a little of chemistry was used to increase potency or take away the adverse effects
Synthetic: entirely man made
Biological: These are things such as vaccines, which are made by biological processes. They are much larger in molecular size than the other classifications of drugs
what needs to happen in order for a generic drug to be approved
It needs to be shown graphically that it reaches bioequivalence, meaning the two drugs produce similar max concentration peaks and drops
