What is a drug

A

There are two definitions of a drug.
Definition #1:
This is a compound or substance that is taken, for purposes outside of normal function that has biochemical/physiological effects that can be therapeutic

Definition #2:
this anything that it is used for the treatment, cure, diagnosis of a disease

Classification of drugs

A

natural; the active ingredient is extracted from the natural substance (ie flower)
Semi-synthetic: a little of chemistry was used to increase potency or take away the adverse effects
Synthetic: entirely man made
Biological: These are things such as vaccines, which are made by biological processes. They are much larger in molecular size than the other classifications of drugs

what needs to happen in order for a generic drug to be approved

A

It needs to be shown graphically that it reaches bioequivalence, meaning the two drugs produce similar max concentration peaks and drops
